Play and no-stress musical exploration is one of the best ways to give music to children for life.  Most children around 9 or 10 can play and create with chords, and in summer, each week will include ideas for children to explore sound on the piano creatively, as well as ideas for making spontaneous music together for family members of all ages and skill levels.

Chord fluency is absolutely foundational to being able to play music with understanding as well as to create freely on any instrument, and building it on the piano is the best way to internalize it fully (and for life!).   

It's not enough to just know the chords, but also their function inside of a key.   If you don't automatically and effortlessly identify the music you encounter as being in a key and as numbers inside of that key, you are not yet fluent in music.  Everything will feel difficult, regardless of how you learn it. 

But you can make the shift to thinking in numbers easily, and this is the top priority of everything in this program. 

Meanwhile, we will also be playing and creating melodies and painting with other colors on piano inside of each key, as being fluent and free in a key is not just about the chords, but actually about how every note in the scale (and outside of the scale) relates to and resolves in the context of the key you are are playing in.

Many of us have music study trauma from an educational system that regards creative thought and playing music with understanding as a distraction from technical performance—at all costs (even at the cost of making the child hate making music, seemingly irreparably.).   So even if you are fluent in playing in all the keys, it doesn't mean you are free in your mind to explore and play without second-guessing EVERY NOTE.  So equally, the purpose of the Paris Creative Piano Café is to absolutely normalize play and creative expression with ZERO fear or anxiety.  Yes, it is possible!   The garden begins to grow when the sun shines in!

This summer in the café, in the live piano labs and in the daily menu challenges, we will play in (and with!) one major or minor key each week, starting with C and A minor in June, and then through all of the sharp keys throughout the summer. (C, Am, G, Em, D, Bm, A, F#m, E, C#m, B, and G#m!).  Each week will also feature a summer song and summer piano piece to play in the key of the week.

In the Fall and Winter of 2026, we play and create with all of the flat keys in the café.

If you miss some weeks this summer because of travel, etc., it is not necessary to go back through the keys you missed in order to jump right back into the café class and weekly menu.  You will be able to take on new keys logically and confidently once you have been through the first two key classes of the summer, which set up our protocol for each key we explore.   (After each live class, there will also be a replay you can watch if you miss anything or want to review it later.)  

No, nothing in the Paris Creative Piano Café is pre-made or repurposed.  Everything is made daily and weekly in real time, as this is a responsive, living, breathing experience which will evolve according to questions, conversations, and creative responses to what is offered along the way as we go through the summer and through the keys and musical ideas we will be playing with!

This class is designed for musicians of all skill levels, and not just pianists, but also for other instrumentalists or singers who recognize how essential it is for their musicianship to have command of chords and keys on piano and are seeking more freedom in their musical life.

Knowing the names of the piano keys and already having a little piano skill going in is helpful, but I've had students as young as 11 with just beginning piano skills who took off immediately with chords, transposing easily into each new key with confidence and creativity. Pretty cool!
